I used to skip classes in high school to head over to this place and get some tacos and fries. If I recall right they had killer burritos and awesome cheese sauce. It was one of the few places you could get a burger and Mexican food under one roof.
I also think the owner was a white guy? It always threw me for a loop but he had great food!
The OLD Big Al’S
Now before you say I just like strippers I will tell you I am not much of a strip club person. Side note alert! This might be due to the fact when I went to my first strip club at 18 which might of been Cappa or Fluffers (it was a piece of crap place) don’t recall .. I thought the stripper really liked me. Like the buffoon I was I emptied my wallet for this girl just to find out that was her job .. lesson learned and from then on I never liked them much …. ok back to the reasons I liked Big Als.
The main reason I liked big Als because at one point it had a whole block of bars attached to it that you could walk around in on the inside. I think they called it 4plex or something. I used to go the bars try and hit on women and when I failed I would go look at some nude dancers before I went home.
I also had the following happen to there that I will remeber forever.
- I watched my 60 year old friends dad get a lap dance. It was weird thinking he had a boner.
- Another friend of mine paid some coin to get a BJ from a stripper … YIKES
- I watched a big fight in front of the place all while eating some hoops pizza was awesome!
- I had a stripper call me out once for sitting in the cheap seats for a long time.
- But really back to the main reason I just enjoyed paying one cover and getting a bunch of options.
Tom Cats Uptown
I love live music and this was the place for it for a long time. I used to go to Tom Cats on weekly basis to see great local cover and original bands. They had a good food menu and decent beer selection but one thing that sucked was the restroom man o man that restroom was a SHIT hole! I lived within walking distance so it was my hangout and I loved it but I did hate seeing it fall apart.
I feel like the bar owner never put a dime back into the place so of course as time goes on and new places open they ended up closing. They needed a bar rescue!
My grandparents used to take me to Harold’s Hamburgers and I recall always liking it. It seemed like a place straight from the 70’s or 80’s and nothing had been updated.
I am probably romanticizing the past here but I miss it and I wish I could go again to get some old memories revived in my booze soaked brain. I think they had a decent tenderloin.
Westlake Cinema aka the dollar theater
Being from Creve Coeur we did not have the spare cash to be going to the fancy cinemas we had to wait 3 months until the movie went to the cheap cinemas and that was Westlake Cinemas! At the time Landmark was the nice place to go.
For all you kids Westlake Shopping center used to be a crappy, gross, and overall rundown place to go to. It is nothing now like it used to be. Now it is nice and stay at home moms got there but before it was poor people and parents taking their kids to Chucky Cheese or Showbiz as it used to be called.
The first movie I recall seeing there was this gem of a movie (trailer below) Space Invaders …. I think me and my brothers walked out halfway through and took the money my dad gave us and bought toys at Toys R Us.
Otherwise some notable movies I saw there was the Matrix and I saw Freddy’s Dead (in 3D like the old school red and blue glasses kind) there as a child mind you by my not so smart step mom. Thanks for the memories!
One other notable thing .. as a teenager I managed to sneak in around 8-10 beers in my coat and jeans .. it was a real David Blaine moment for me .. totally magic! So after having a few of the beers I dropped one and it rolled down the to the front of the theater clanking the whole time. The place had a no bull shit security guard I was scared for my life he was going to bust me but he didn’t and I had a great time.
